Faultory / Field notes

Curiosity, step by step.

The evidence is open. Your job is to connect it carefully.

1. Read the briefing

Start with the question and timeline. Resist filling the gaps with the ending you already know. Dates and sequence can rule out an explanation before any calculation does.

2. Open the evidence

Each exhibit summarizes a particular observation, finding or document. Follow its source links. Ask what it establishes directly, what it only suggests, and what would be needed to connect it to an outcome.

3. Test an explanation

Pick the interpretation best supported by the record and compare it with the explanation provided. An initially plausible choice can still overlook a mechanism or a missing measurement. Revising your hypothesis is part of the investigation.

4. Trace the chain

The findings bring the mechanisms and contributing conditions together. Read the uncertainty note and takeaways. A single failure rarely explains everything, and hindsight can make a hard decision look falsely obvious.

Your notebook

Reasoning choices and reviewed-exhibit markers save in localStorage on this browser. There is no account or cross-device synchronization. On Your notebook, export a backup, import one, or reset progress. Clearing site data, private browsing or device changes can lose saved work.

Offline and installation

On a supported browser over HTTPS, Faultory downloads its static case library in the background. After the download finishes, investigations remain available offline. Use your browser’s install or Add to Home Screen command if offered; installation is optional. Connectivity is needed to open external source documents and Gumroad links.

New editions

A notice appears when a new site edition has downloaded. Choose Update now to use it. Asset caches are separate from progress; updating keeps compatible answers. If the wording of a case changes, the notebook asks you to revisit the evidence. Browser storage can still fail, so export a backup if your progress matters to you.

Read it your way

The stages help organize the material; findings are always available. Keyboard users can move through controls normally, and the page honors reduced-motion preferences. With JavaScript disabled, the complete case remains readable as one document.
